Wine info: background information and a guide to the catalogue

In this section of OrganicBioWines.eu you will find background information about wine and practical guidance on using this catalogue of sustainably produced wines from the Benelux and the United Kingdom.

Wine knowledge and origins

  • Origins of wine — the history of viticulture in Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, from Roman times to the modern revival.
  • Wine knowledge — explanations of grape varieties, PIWI varieties, vinification and the characteristics of cool-climate wines.

Special wine styles

  • Natural wines — wines made with minimal intervention, without added sulphites or with a very low dosage.
  • Vegan wine — why not every wine is vegan by nature and which fining agents are or are not used.
  • Wine without sulphites — what sulphur does in wine, which legal limits apply and what "no added sulphites" really means.

How to use the catalogue

Via the Wine producers menu you will find an overview of certified producers per country, each with a detail page listing their wines, certifications and contact details. Under Wines you can browse all listed wines per country; use the search field above the table to filter by name, producer or grape variety. The Alc and Vol columns show the alcohol percentage and bottle size.

Under Wine legislation and Wine certificates you can read which designations of origin (PDO/PGI, AOP) and certification schemes (EU Organic, Demeter, Certisys, SKAL, SWGB) apply per country and what they mean.
