Which wine producers are included

All wine producers listed on OrganicBioWines.eu have been carefully selected and assessed against a range of sustainability criteria. They must meet the following conditions:

  • They must be wine producers that produce sustainable wine from grapes in accordance with European and national wine legislation (for the time being, not from other fruits such as apples and berries).
  • This means that the wine producers must be demonstrably certified under EU Organic, SKAL, Demeter, Biodyvin, Certisys or SWGB.
  • The grapes must be grown and the wine produced in the same wine region (from grape to bottling within the same region). In exceptional cases, different wine regions may be included, for example in the case of cooperatives.

If a wine producer is certified under EU Organic, SKAL, Demeter, Biodyvin, Certisys or SWGB but sources grapes from outside the region or country, that producer may be included as an exception.

Classification of wine producers

Wine castleThe primary category includes all wine producers that grow grapes and vinify wine in accordance with wine legislation and supplementary regulations, and that meet the selection criteria above.

The level of certification is also an important factor. We distinguish between two groups:

  • Yes – For certified wine producers, we have been able to verify through official channels and websites that they are indeed certified. This group is marked with 'Yes'.
  • Yes* – This applies to wine producers that are undergoing certification or conversion, or that are certified for one or more estates. This group is marked with 'Yes*'.

For each wine producer, we indicate the production method predominantly used by the producer (from grape to bottling). We use the following categories:

  • Biodynamic: Biodynamic only
  • Organic: Organic only
  • Org/Veg: Organic and Vegan
  • Org/Biodyn: Organic and Biodynamic
  • Org/Biodyn/Veg: Organic, Biodynamic and Vegan
