Slovenian Wine Legislation – Official Wine Regions

Reference date: 3 August 2026.

Total vineyard area: approx. 17,500 ha, approx. 28,000 businesses, 2,500+ bottlers and an annual production of 800,000–900,000 hl. EU member since 2004; approx. 70% of production is quality wine with a geographical indication.

Vineyards lie on steep slopes (often terraced), resulting in higher production costs but excellent quality.

3.1 Podravje (north-east) – 2 districts

Slovenia: approx. 60 recognised grape varieties; white varieties predominate. Zelen and Pinela are exclusive to the Vipava Valley.
